I have Medi-Cal. Why Do I have a Share of Cost (SOC)?
Some Medi-Cal members have to pay, or promise to pay, a set amount each month for medical expenses before they can get Medi-Cal Rx benefits. This amount is called Share of Cost (SOC). The SOC works like a deductible in private insurance or is sometimes called a Spend Down.
-
I have Medi-Cal, why do I have a copay?
Coordination of Benefits (COB) is a way to figure out which health plan or insurance company pays first if someone has more than one kind of coverage. These plans can be from different sources, like an individual policy, a group plan, an employer, or a self-funded plan.
The term “Other Health Coverage” (OHC) means any insurance or program that helps pay for health care besides Medicaid. Examples include regular insurance companies, certain government programs like Medicare, and commercial health plans.
Medi-Cal Rx usually pays last, after other coverage has paid. However, there are exceptions: if a member also has coverage through AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), Indian Health Services, or Veterans Administration (VA) Services, or if they have Medicare Part D and the medicine is not excluded by Medicare law, Medi-Cal Rx is not the payer.
-
What should I do if Medi-Cal Rx has my Other Health Coverage (OHC) setup incorrectly?
If the Medi-Cal Rx eligibility verification system(s) indicates that a member has OHC, but the member claims there is no OHC, advise the member to contact the county eligibility worker.
